Background to Auction Mart Chaplaincy

• For more than a decade the Churches Regional Commission  for Yorkshire and the Humber (CRC) delivered very effective support and development work amongst farming communities in the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorks Moors
• Independent evaluations rated this work extremely highly, especially in terms of the impact on those farmers who had a limited track record of engaging with conventional sources of support
• The work was extremely effective in partnership working, incorporating links with local churches and the Christian charity FCN (Farming Community Network)
• A critical success factor was the building of relationships between development officers and the farming community especially through a regular presence in auction marts
• The demise of the CRC and the previous funding meant there was a high risk that the impact of this work would be lost unless something could be done to continue a presence at least in some of the auction marts
• Yorkshire Churches Rural Business Support (YCRBS) was established to provide a positive response to this identified need for a presence in auction marts
